Laser Demarcation

Laser Demarcation, also known as Demarcation Laser Photocoagulation (DLP), is a laser procedure used to treat retinal tears and certain localized retinal detachments. By creating a series of small laser spots around the affected area, the treatment forms a protective barrier that helps prevent the retinal tear or detachment from spreading.

When performed early, laser demarcation can help stabilize the retina and reduce the risk of more serious complications that may require surgery.

Why Is Laser Demarcation Performed?

Laser demarcation may be recommended to treat:

  • Retinal Tears: Seals the area surrounding a tear to help prevent retinal detachment.

  • Small or Localized Retinal Detachments: Creates a barrier around the detached area to help keep it from progressing.

  • Areas of Retinal Weakness: Reinforces vulnerable areas of the retina that may be at risk for future complications.

What Happens During the Procedure?

Laser demarcation is performed in our office and typically takes less than 15 minutes.

  • Preparation: The pupil is dilated, and numbing drops are used to keep the eye comfortable.

  • Positioning: You will sit at a specialized microscope while the physician examines the retina.

  • Laser Treatment: A laser is used to create a series of small treatment spots around the retinal tear or detached area.

  • Completion: The laser spots form tiny scars that bond the retina to the underlying tissue, helping create a protective seal.

During the procedure, you may notice flashes of light and experience mild pressure or discomfort, but significant pain is uncommon.

Recovery After Treatment

Most patients can return to their normal activities shortly after the procedure. Temporary side effects may include:

  • Mild eye irritation

  • Blurred vision from dilating drops

  • Light sensitivity

  • Mild headache

These symptoms typically improve within several hours to a few days. Your physician may recommend over-the-counter pain relief if needed and will schedule follow-up visits to monitor the retina's healing.

The Benefits of Laser Demarcation

Laser Demarcation is a quick, minimally invasive treatment that can help prevent retinal tears and small retinal detachments from becoming more serious. By creating a secure barrier around the affected area, the procedure helps preserve retinal health, reduce the risk of future complications, and protect vision.
